This week’s Global Woman to watch is Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, West Africa.

The author of the critically acclaimed novel, Beasts of No Nation, Ngozi was the first female Finance Minister of Nigeria.  Following her three-year tenure as Finance Minister, she also served as Nigeria’s Foreign Minister.  The Harvard educated scholar obtained her Ph.D. in Regional Economics and Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Prior to her cabinet posts in the Nigerian government, Ngozi was Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group.  She was instrumental in helping Nigeria obtain its first ever sovereign credit rating.  Two years ago, World Bank President, Robert Zoellick appointed Ngozi to the post of Managing Director of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., a position she currently holds.  Active in the non-profit sector as well, Ngozi is a fellow at the Brookings Institution and serves on the Advisory Board of Global Financial Integrity and on the Board of Directors of the World Resources Institute.  In 2006, she earned the honor of being named “Nigerian of the Year.”
