This week’s Global Woman To Watch is Maimah Karmo.

Maimah Karmo is the Founder of Tigerlily Foundation and a two-year survivor of breast cancer.
On February 28, 2006, at 4:45 p.m., she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had no family history of breast cancer; and was only 32-years old. While undergoing chemotherapy, she created Tigerlily Foundation to educate, empower, advocate for and support young women affected by breast cancer. Tigerlily Foundation provides women with chemotherapy buddy support, financial assistance, and empowerment and to give young women a voice. In 2006, Tigerlily Foundation donated a mammogram machine to Liberia, the first the country had in more than 16 years. Maimah Karmo is a speaker and member of numerous breast cancer and advocacy organizations, including the Young Survival Coalition, the National Breast Cancer Coalition, Y-ME, the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA). She is also on the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) Young Adult Alliance (YAA). She has received numerous awards for community service and activism. Ms. Karmo has appeared in Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Global Woman Magazine and the Cure Magazine. She has also been featured on Fox 5, WJLA 7, News Channel 8, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America and numerous national radio stations. Most dear to her heart is being the mother of a beautiful 5-year old girl, whom she adores. This week’s Global Woman To Watch is M. Charito Kruvant.

Mrs. Kruvant is founder, president, and CEO of Creative Associates International, Inc.(CAII), a professional and technical services firm that specializes in communities in transition, education, and training. Prior to launching CAII, she worked with the Advisory and Learning Exchange as a prominent advocate and program designer for bilingual education and learning disabled programs. She is a former member of the Emergency Educational Transitional board of trustees of the District of Columbia Public Schools. Born in Bolivia and raised in Argentina, Kruvant received her bachelor of arts from Colegio Ward in Argentina, and her master of arts in early childhood development from the University of Maryland. She is a long-time resident of Washington, DC.

This week’s Global Woman To Watch is Tonya McNeill-Weary.

Tonya is the President, CEO and Founding Principal of the McNeill Group Insurance Agency. She is a recognized leader in the insurance and financial industry. Tonya formed the Michigan Association for Female Entrepreneurs in 2003 with the goal of helping women business owners gain access to markets and to encourage women to maximize opportunities and overcome the challenges that face women business owners today. She has earned numerous awards including the AXA Achievement Award, the National Collegiate Business Award and several others. Tonya holds a degree from Davenport University and is currently pursuing an MBA at Walsh College in Troy Michigan. She travels the world to support women’s initiatives and is committed to strengthening the community by working in partnership with other organizations that support women owned businesses.

This week’s Global Woman To Watch is The Honorable Michaelle Jean.

Born in Port au Prince, Haiti, Michaelle immigrated to Canada with her family in 1968 in search of safety from the dictatorship regime at that time. She worked with Quebec shelters for battered women. She later became a highly regarded journalist and anchor of information programs at Radio-Canada and CBC News World. In September 2005, Michaelle became Canada’s 27th Governor General. Prior to her governorship, she won several honors, including the Prix Mireille-Lanctot for a report on spousal violence.

This week’s Global Woman To Watch is Johanna Sigurdardottir.

The first female Prime Minister of Iceland, Johanna Siguroardottir is a social democrat and the longest-serving member of Iceland’s Parliament. She is the former Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security. Born in Reykjavik, Prime Minister Sigurdardottir studied at the Commercial College of Iceland. Following graduation, she worked as a flight attendant. She previously presided over the Board of the Icelandic Cabin Crew Association and was also a Board member of the Commercial Workers’ Union. Global Woman Magazine congratulates Prime Minister Sigurdardottir.

This week’s Global Woman To Watch is Isha.

This Australian native created a special spiritual guide called The Isha System. She describes The Isha System as the “secret to freedom”. She admits that it is the only way she knows to live. Following a period of personal crisis, Isha embarked on her new spiritual discovery, which has taken off very well. She travels around the world teaching The Isha System. Her system teaches mankind how to break boundaries internally and take an inner journey and how not to react to aggressive situations. Isha expects to lecture to 200 pregnant inmates at an Argentina prison in the near future. She has taught close to 60,000 people, including nuns, actors and rabbis. Isha is the author of the acclaimed book, Why Walk When You Can Fly?

This week’s Global Woman to watch is Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, West Africa.

The author of the critically acclaimed novel, Beasts of No Nation, Ngozi was the first female Finance Minister of Nigeria. Following her three-year tenure as Finance Minister, she also served as Nigeria’s Foreign Minister. The Harvard educated scholar obtained her Ph.D. in Regional Economics and Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to her cabinet posts in the Nigerian government, Ngozi was Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group. She was instrumental in helping Nigeria obtain its first ever sovereign credit rating. Two years ago, World Bank President, Robert Zoellick appointed Ngozi to the post of Managing Director of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., a position she currently holds. Active in the non-profit sector as well, Ngozi is a fellow at the Brookings Institution and serves on the Advisory Board of Global Financial Integrity and on the Board of Directors of the World Resources Institute. In 2006, she earned the honor of being named “Nigerian of the Year.” |

Global Woman To Watch closes 2008 and welcomes 2009 with Artie Lee Harris, the oldest woman in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A.

The second of eight children, Artie was born a hundred and six years ago in Occoquan, Virginia. At 106 years old, Ms. Harris possesses the memory of a sixty year old; she is able to recount stories of her childhood during U.S. President William Taft’s administration. She can also tell you in detail what she was doing and where she was the day that Rosa Parks changed American history. When asked to share her secret of longevity with women around the world, Artie said, “I drink a lot of orange and grape juices. I never smoked, never drove an automobile, and I did not drink alcohol except at Christmas dinners.”

This week’s Global Woman to Watch is Cindy Lou Dale.
Cindy is an award-winning writer and photojournalist who hails from a small farming community in Southern Africa. She has studied in the U.S., the U.K., South Africa and Mainland Europe. Her career has moved her around the world to such places as Sarajevo, Cape Town, Casablanca, Luxembourg, Lusaka and Maputo. In 1998, she immigrated to England and recently relocated to Belgium, where she currently resides. Cindy has served as the Belgian Correspondent for Global Woman Magazine for the past two years. Her photography and articles have been featured in past issues of Global Woman.

This week's Global Woman to Watch is Nissa Bolinger.

Minnesota native Nissa is a descendent of Scandinavian settlers in the United States and is the founder of Babee Elegant. This weekend's Global Woman to Watch is Waris Dirie.

“As the United Nations appointed Global Ambassador against female genital mutilation (FGM), Waris Dirie has authored five books which speak on her personal experience with FGM. Born in Somalia, East Africa, Waris is a retired high fashion model and is the current President and Founder of the Waris Dirie Foundation. Waris is also a fighter, and strives to insure that one day no woman will have to endure the pain and suffering of FGM. Her persistence led to her instrumental role in getting the European countries to denounce FGM and pressure countries in Africa to ban the act.”

This weekend's Global Woman to Watch is Darcy Winslow.

Ms. Winslow is a senior advisor for the Nike Foundation and is a long-standing Nike Executive. She focuses on building a strong relationship with the female athlete/consumer through innovation, product, communication, and retail. Winslow has held many positions within the company, including biomechanical research assistant, director of footwear and apparel product testing, and product development manager.

This weekend's Global Woman to Watch is Dr. Fran Harris.
Fran Harris is a former Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) champion, a television personality, an inspirational speaker and an ordained minister. During her years in professional basketball, Dr. Harris played for the Houston Comets. She retired in 1998 and has since authored two books, What on Earth Am I Doing Here and Will the Real You Stand Up.

This week’s Global Woman to Watch is Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is the first woman to ever be elected President of Liberia and the first woman to ever lead an African nation. President Johnson-Sirleaf is a graduate of Harvard University, where she earned a Masters Degree in Economics. Prior to her election in 2005, President Johnson-Sirleaf worked at the United Nations and the World Bank.

This week’s Global Woman to Watch is Dr. Jillian Davis.
This week's Global Woman to Watch is Dr. Jillian Davis. Dr. Davis is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. She conducts cancer research with focus on increasing the effectiveness of breast cancer chemotherapy, while at the same time, reducing the negative side effects associated with therapy. Dr. Davis has published her research in several journals. She earned her PhD. in Pharmacology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. at the age of 28, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from A&T State University in North Carolina. |

This week’s Global Woman to Watch is Nancy Brinker.

Nancy is the Founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. When Nancy’s sister, Susan Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was Susan’s wish that they take action to ensure that no other woman would undergo what she endured. Shortly after Susan died, Nancy herself was diagnosed with the disease. Nancy moved forward with her sister’s wish and founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Since its inception, the foundation has grown and has attracted women from all parts of the world. Global Woman Magazine applauds Nancy for what her foundation does toward finding a cure. |

This weeks Global Woman to Watch is Susan Silberstein.

Susan Silberstein is the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education (CACE). She serves as Educational Advisor to the National Foundation for Alternative Medicine. Dr. Silberstein is a global speaker on nutrition and cancer prevention. The Emmy winner actress is a breast cancer survivor after recently undergoing a double mastectomy. Christina has appeared in several television hit series such as Fox’ Married With Children and NBC’s Jessie. She has decided to help raise money for breast cancer research and to raise awareness about the disease. Global Woman wishes Christina well!

Referred to as the First Lady of American Magazines, Cathie Black is the President of Hearst Magazines, a division of Hearst Corporation. She is one of the leading figures in American Publishing today. In 2007, Cathie released her highly acclaimed book, Basic Black: The Essential Guide for Getting Ahead at Work and Life.

Angela Merkel is the first woman to ever be elected as German Chancellor. She holds a Doctorate Degree in Physics. Chancellor Merkel’s current approval rating in Germany is 75%, partly due to the stability of a low unemployment rate in the past five years.
